Mental Health Support
As the mental health resource coordinator for iAlign, I plan to collaborate with the team and community in bringing accessibility to mental health resources for iAlign’s students. These resources will range from referrals to specialized mental health therapists to psychoeducational tools about how to maintain emotional wellness. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 adults reported the pandemic had a serious impact on their mental health and 1 in 6 adolescents between the ages of 12-17 experienced a major depressive episode (Click here for study). Our collective mental health is important to tend to and through iAlign’s dance program; students will not only be able to experience a space to creatively express themselves, they will also be able to receive support from the community in improving and maintaining their overall emotional wellness.
Studies reveal that brain activity when dancing, displays significant brain functioning called theta synchronization that is linked to cognitive and emotional processes necessary for interpersonal skills and an understanding of oneself (Click Here for Study). Accessibility to mental health support in recent times has been needed more than ever and we plan to create opportunities for our community to experience holistic wellness through of dance partnered with mental health support.
